Somebody.  Help.  Me.  Were my inward groans as I laid on my living room floor while my phone rang.  I Literally.  Couldn’t.  Move.  The Jillian Michaels 6 week Abs workout had devastated my body.  And the run from the day before completely sealed the deal.  As I processed with my own thoughts, since that was my only option at this point, I contemplated my 2017 New Year’s Resolutions-Getting back into the 6 week Women’s WOW Hour:  Where waking up early is lifegiving.  Sure I had gotten up 1 hour early to spend time with God for 30 minutes and exercise for 30 minutes atleast 4 days a week last year at this time, but today is a different day.  And my current sprawled out posture is speaking louder than any past success.  My brain began the rationalizing train-This year presents new challenges of a toddler addition to our family.  The baby weight seems a tad more than I experienced with my 2 other girlies.  I have taken on more responsibilities as Mom, wife, student, minister, ect.  The weather is colder outside than last year.  The mid day time seems much more appealing.  I was in need of a booster shot of hope.  And speaking of shots, my rabbit trail mind went to the horrendous episode I had this week with my 1 year old getting her vaccinations.

The nurse meant well, but frankly did a terrible job.  She accidentally touched the needle while in the midst of giving the final 5th shot.  So as my screaming child just having had shots in both legs and arms is looking at me with questioning, pain filled eyes the nurse says, “Sorry, I have to go get another shot because I contaminated this one.”  Nice.  And 10 minutes later, as I have just soothed my sweet baboo to a non snotty nosed, gasping for air state, she gave her one more shot.  And this.  felt.  like.  Absolute.  Abuse.  As our day was completely shot (no pun intended, well actually it was), I contemplated why I put both of us through this pain.  And my only comfort was this fact:  The future benefits far outweighed the current pain.

All that lovely shot story to say, just like vaccinations future benefits far outweigh the current pain, so disciplining ourselves to wake up early to meet with God and exercise future benefits far outweigh the current pain.  We call exercising regularly, getting up early and prioritizing time with God disciplines for a reason.  It hurts.  But the current hurt is NOTHING compared to the INTENSE JOY, PEACE, HOPE, STRENGTH, HEALTH and PURPOSE-ultimately LIFE we get when we.  Get.  Fit.  Fit for the day-mind, body and Spirit fit.

Fit is not a destination, it is a way of life.

As I continue to lay on the floor, I am encouraged and I want you to be too.  I want you to know if you start WOW Hour this Monday, January 30th and follow through with these disciplines for the next 6 weeks, you.  Are.  Not.  Alone.  I am in.  You will have me and hopefully I will have you for some sweet accountability.  And here our some inspirations to get our minds, Spirit, and body prepared for the upcoming WOW Hour 6 week Challenge.

Inspirations as we embark on the WOW Hour 6 week Challenge:

  • From the Chronicle’s of Narnia:  As Aslan said to Prince Caspian when he said, “I don’t think I’m ready”, so I say to us, who may not feel able or ready for this 2017 WOW Hour 6 week challenge-“It is for that very reason I know you are.”
  • From my physical trainer friend:  You gotta practice to get better
  • From a wise person:  No pain, no gain!
  • From the Bible:  It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.  Galatians 5:1
  • From Jeremy Camp, words from the Song “Give Me Jesus”:  In the morning when I rise, give me Jesus
  • From and unknown person:  I may not be there yet, but I’m closer than I was yesterday
  • From an unknown person:  “It is not easy, but it is worth it,” “I CAN and I WILL” now repeat that everyday.

Hey my friends,

To be completely cliche, but know I am genuine-hope you had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!  I am slowly getting back into the new groove.  Making some needed changes-for example, GOING. TO. WORKOUT.  I know this is not a new discipline to strive for in January, but once again, seriously genuine about getting my body a movin!  I wonder as you look over your 2016, what stands out to you as some old and “not so lifegiving areas” which were not workin for ya.  And then as you are “out with the old”, what new spiritual, personal health and wholeness, or areas as a mother/wife/friend/worker you can discipline yourself to in 2017?  Now is your time to shine.  His mercies are new every morning and there is hope.  for.  you.  today.

So 2 options to consider for this January 2017-get in God’s Word more and get your body moving more.  If these 2 are resonating with your Spirit but you wonder, but how.  can.  I.  fit.  this.  in my already busy, I’ve got your back my sister’s!

And below here are some of my favorite bible study methods and workouts which you can incorporate with WOW Hour or just do on your own!  Just so you know….i am praying. for. you.  So get goin’ with Jesus in 2017, you.  will.  not.  regret.  it.  Look out for the life of enjoyment and purpose you’ve got in store with a Father who we get ALL good gifts from!

4 OPTIONAL BIBLE STUDY METHODS

  1. Dear Father, Dear Daughter MethodThis journaling method is how I structured my book, “Sing Over Me: A Women’s Devotional through the Psalms.” It is us, His daughter’s, writing to our heavenly Father, and then listening to hear what He says through His Word and Spirit to apply to our lives.
  • Pray, read (in God’s Word), then write to God. Then see if there is anything troubling your heart or mind.  Write about this to God.  As you write, be transparent.  Ask God questions about the specific situation.  Always end with what you need from God in this particular situation and the truths you know about Him and His Word.

 

  • Be still and ask God to speak. Then write down His promises- “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening” 1 Sam 3:10b  Make sure you are away from distractions and loud sounds in order to quiet your heart and mind before God.  Listen until you have wisdom, an impression, a picture, a verse, or overall peace about what you just wrote to God.  Write down any scripture and/or impressions you receive during this time of listening.  Do not be discouraged if you do not seem to hear anything, God loves to spend time with us in the stillness and He refreshes our heart, mind and Spirit when we are obedient to spend time with Him-even if we aren’t aware of it.  Write down promises and encouragement you found from God’s true, living Word.  Continue to sit in silence and practice the discipline of waiting to hear from the Lord.  Persevere in this discipline of listening to God.  I know I find it extremely difficult in our busy culture to drown out the noise of my own mind, but even more reason for us do as God tells us, “Be still and know that I am God” ps 46:10.
  1. Free Flowing Method
  • Pray for God to speak to you as you read a passage from His living Word (Heb 4:12).
  • Get on your computer or grab a notebook and pen and write what comes to mind! The key is not what we write about, but that what we say is honest and from the heart.  God desires to meet us right where we are, not where we feel we should be or want to be.  He wants true intimacy with us.  Just like there is no right or wrong way to talk with God, there is also no right or wrong way to write to Him.  We can simply tell Him what is on our heart.  If we are concerned about a particular relationship, we should write about it.  If we need to ask Him for forgiveness, we can write down our apology.  If we are excited about an answered prayer, we can express our gratitude.  If a particular scripture is resonating with us, we can expand on it and dig deeper in order to apply it to our current situation.  God has made us all unique, so use your own creativity and style as you write to Him!
  1. A.C.T MethodSome of us need a structured format or plan when starting a new habit. I am similar. I thrive under others’ good ideas for how to do things!  First pray for God to speak to you and read from God’s Word, then:
  • Ask- Write down your prayer requests, God says “Come to me all you who are weary and I will give you rest” (Mt 11:28).
  • Confess-Your sin, repent and turn to God for His refreshment and peace (Acts 3:19).
  • Thanksgiving-To God for specific ways He has blessed you, for what He has done for you, or simply for His character traits; write down your gratitude for our Father who is the giver of ALL good gifts in this life and the eternal life to come (James 1:17) .
  1. S.O.A.P Method – S.O.A.P stands for Scripture, Observation, Application and Prayer. Each S.O.A.P. entry can be one sentence, or it could be pages and pages of thoughtful note taking. Each day will be different as you move through digging deeper into God’s Word.
  • Scripture-After reading a chapter(s) from the Bible, write down the verse(s) which “the Spirit highlighted”/resonated/you had a pull to read over again
  • Observation-Write down what you observed or what truth stuck out to you in these scriptures.
  • Application- Think on how you can apply the verse(s) to your day, week, life, etc. and write about this.
  • Pray-Write out a prayer to God based on how your mind/heart was renewed to God’s ways instead of your prior ways of thinking/acting and ask Him to help you apply this truth in your life.  

30 MINUTE WORKOUT OPTIONS:

  1. Sign up for and train for a race (running or walking): If you are signing up for a 5K,8K,10K, or half marathon race the Hal Higdon training plans were what I used and found helpful in my training:  http://www.halhigdon.com/training/51137/Marathon-Novice-1-Training-Program
  2. Do a workout DVD with the exercise of your choice-pilates, step, yoga, dance, boxing, Zumba, ect.
  3. Do a YouTube workout with your favorite trainer
  4. Walk the hills in a nearby neighborhood
  5. Do a Daily Burn or some other Workout program App on the computer/Ipad/phone
  6. Do a workout class at the gym
  7. Swim laps at a local swimming pool
  8. Go on a bike ride (on a stationary bike or outdoors)
  9. Lift weights combined with a step machine, tredmill or sedimentary workout machine at gym or home
  10. Dance in your living room to your favorite 7 songs

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?  Isaiah 43:19

Getting back into exercising.  Is.  Not.  Easy.  Or fun.  After being on what felt like “house arrest” because this pregnancy sickness took me out of all things active, I am finally starting to ease my way back into our norm (whatever that is).  My “norm” looks something like daily dishes, laundry on Monday’s, texts to friend’s in order to sync schedules for various kid free and kid included activities, Pinterest pin dinners and the shopping for needed ingredients, a daily work out, and time with my Father/in the Word with my latest devotional book.  But trying to get back into the “norm” has been harder than I may have anticipated.  And I am recognizing some of my “norm” must change with a given season-and as challenging and uncomfortable as this may feel, I must surrender.  To God.  And His “norm” He has for me in my now.

I am learning to succumb and even thank Jesus for His new norm for me in this season (And you can too).

Here are my 3 “out with the old, in with His new” daily reality:  

1.  I am embracing a new routine-You have no idea how it pains me to write the following statement:  “I went on a walk a couple days ago”.  You, see, only woosies walk (and I so apologize for offending you if you are a walker-I understand my thinking is scewed and I am in need of heavy counseling for my flawed attitude.)  But you must forgive me. Because I am a runner in heart, body, and mind.  But the run wasn’t workin’ friends.  When I tried my old running “norm” with my daughter the other morning, I lost my lunch.  Literally.  And so you have to know.  My pride.  Was.  Shot.  As I put on my running shoes.  Stepped out of my front door. And got my speed walk on.  Pumping arms and all.

Thank you Jesus for Your new daily routine norms you have for me.

2.  I am willing to make changes in my attitude, activity preferences, how I spend my time in order to love others like Jesus does-You have no idea how it pains me to write the next following statement:  “We have a lizard living in our house”.  My oldest daughter is one with bugs.  Snakes.  Digging in the dirt for treasures.  And I would never have pictured myself encouraging these hobbies.  But now I am embracing them (the hobbies and yes, even the lizard).  Our God is about intimate relationship with us.  And if we are to love Him, we will love others.  And a part of loving those around us is caring about what they care about.  It’s not enough to be apart of the activities/hobbies I like or “get”.  The Lord has given me a new sense of laying down my selfish agenda, to build a home for what seems to be just about the ugliest creature I have ever seen (for instance).

Thank you Jesus for how you made each of us unique and how you have called us to love and appreciate one another.

3.  I am saying “Yes” to the Spirit nudges/Jesus’ agenda for my day, even when I am physically and emotionally weak-While speed walking the other day, I spent time thanking God for His beautiful creation.  I asked Him for strength as I still struggled to keep certain foods down and have strength to be the Mom and wife and friend and Daughter of the King He had called me to be.  I asked Him to show me how to “minister in my weakness”.  Right after this thought I saw a sign in front of me for a garage sale and underneath it said, “Benefiting missions”.  I passed the sign, wanting to keep with my fast walking pace and knowing I didn’t have any money on me to buy anything.  But then an idea, I believe to be a “nudge” from the Lord came into my thoughts, “you should go and pray for them”.  Hmmm.  Feeling pregnant.  Feeling uncomfortable.  Mainly for multiple reasons- I don’t even know the people at the garage sale, let alone if the “missions” the sale is supporting is even one I agree with.  I am needing to get stick to my exercise agenda and be home in a timely fashion.  But the prayer idea did not go away.  And i had just agreed to God to allow Him to do “ministry in my weakness”.  So I went.  And awkwardly browsed the sale.  With no means to buy anything.  But saw a girl in the corner putting out baby clothes.  I asked her if this was her garage sale and she said “yes”.  Long story short-I found out she was going on a week long mission trip.  Asked her if I could pray for her.  Did.  And she said, “Wow, that was so encouraging” as I left.  But truely-I was the one who was the most encouraged.  To be apart of God using me in my weakness.  To see saying “yes” to God’s nudges in ALL seasons only fills us with joy.

Thank you Jesus for Your new ministry norms you have for me.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the Lord.  Isaiah 55:8

I went on a run at my parents house earlier this week and I was asking God where He would have me put my time and energy this summer. “Run a marathon” came to mind.

This had to be God’s idea because there is no way I have the gifting, motivation, or need to run a marathon.  My dreamed up plans up to this point for the summer had consisted of sleeping in, going to a pool with the girls as much as possible, hit the community free lunches at the park, and have some good eats while watching Netflix in my comfy black arm chair.  I guess you could summarize my plans for the summer in one word “lazy”.

God’s word “marathon” and my word “lazy” were not seeming to gell nicely.  This is how life with the Lord seems to go.  He has a completely opposite idea of how I should spend my time.  (But I have to give Him credit, His “out there” ideas haven’t disappointed me once yet.)

My ongoing chat with God went something like this: “Sure, Lord, I have done all the race lengths before it, but my half marathon was a year ago and it was quite the booty woopin.  It is true though that running with You is a joy, but I am not sure I can do it or have the time to put into training for that length of a race!  (Also it cuts back on my eating bon bons on the couch time.)”

I pondered this marathon thing some more as I finished the run and came into my parent’s house.  I went into the kitchen and my Dad strolled in and plopped a magazine down in front of me. “Thought you might want to read this,” he said.  I picked it up and the headline read,

“Winner of the Boston Marathon gives tips for exercise and health”. Hmmmm. Coincidance? I think not.

My husband was in support of it. I bought a book and read up on the training schedule and I had enough time to train this summer. I emailed a marathon running friend about what would be the best one to do and asked if she thought I could do it, she said “The Portland Marathon is a great first one to do (so close to home!) And yes you could do it.” Check. Check. Check. All was a go.  (“Okay God, you win.”)

I realize I go through a similar cycle with the Lord every time He asks me to step out in faith. I get scared. I get a little uneasy about doing something I have never done before. I give Him the reasons this was not in my plan and why I am not qualified/equipped/smart enough/talented enough to do what He is asking of me. I ask Him to confirm and confirm again.

And every time He gently confirms through others, His Word, an inner peace, and/or other “coincidances” that this is THE way for me.

He quiets my heart and says, “It will be okay. Do not be afraid. I will help you. I will be with you and lead you.”

And I realize “Yes” is the only real option. I think back to the “Yes’s in the past and they have brought me more life, joy, peace and purpose than I could have ever known.  So I say “yes” to training to run a marathon this summer.  Expectant for how God will do a work in me.  Saying “yes” to Jesus is the only way to live.  It is living real life.

What “first” is the Lord calling you into this season?  Join me in training for a race this summer, or stepping out in a way that you believe God is directing you.  Be brave.  Be a faithful daughter.  Be ready.  Because good is up ahead!

I TWEAKED MY LOWER BACK. DROVE 3 HOURS WITH THE GIRLS IN THE CAR. FORGOT MULTIPLE ITEMS FOR THE TRIP.  CHILDCARE PLANS CHANGED.  I BROKE DOWN ON THE HIGHWAY DUE TO A FAULTY BRAND NEW TIRE.  I WAS LATE.  I WAS DONE BEFORE THE WEEKEND OF MINISTRY EVEN BEGAN.

By God’s grace I arrived at the women’s retreat in one piece.  But, I did not come in full strength.  I felt unprepared and mentally exhausted.  Not to mention, extremely angry and frustrated with my circumstances. I was ready to give up.

The verse,  Not by might, not by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord.  (Zec. 4:6),  filled my mind as I walked through the cabin doors.

I asked the women on Friday night, “What obstacles stood in the way of you being able to come to retreat?”  Every woman I spoke with told me of at least one major difficulty she had encountered on her way to or as she signed up for the retreat.

Through the Lord’s strength, all of us sister’s overcame the enemies obstacles.  Through His Spirit, women were drawn to Jesus.  I give Him FULL credit and glory for our sweet time of salvation, healing, growth, and renewal.

God’s presence changes me.  And being with my sisters changes me.  Everytime.  Over the weekend, I had my: perspective altered.  Burdens and worries lifted.  Joy and hope restored.  Mind renewed.  Purpose confirmed.  I had the opportunity to pray, listen, worship, cry, and laugh with new and old friends.

But I didn’t take care of one key component: myself .  In my excitement to serve and fear to miss opportunities to show Christ’s love, I burned out.  I broke down in tears before leading worship Saturday night due to extreme exhaustion.

James Bryan Smith in, “The Good and Beautiful Community” teaches, “We need to have balance when it comes to the issue of serving others and taking care of ourselves.  I have many Christian friends who are so focused on serving others that they neglect their own needs, and sometimes the needs of their families.  We need to be aware of the condition of our own souls and bodies, and to take care of that first, without feeling any guilt about it.”

And so I learned something about myself. It is in everyone’s best interest if I take time out to replenish, to fill my cup.  And I can do this without stress or guilt because I am not the Savior, Jesus is.  And I take my orders of who, when, and where to show His love. 

Even Jesus took time away from His mission to make sure His needs were taken care of.

Jillian’s 5 ingredient recipe for her own personal sanity and wholeness:

       Ingredient                               Amount

  1. Sleep                                   Atleast one 4 hour block of sleep each night. (With a newborn)
  2. Prayer and the Word      Continual prayer and a daily alone time in the Word.
  3. Time with family             Weekly quality time with my husband, close friends, and girls.
  4. Exercise                              Go for a run a couple times a week.  I have more energy, and less stress.
  5. Use of spiritual gifts        Daily, weekly, monthly obedience to the Spirit’s voice in serving others.

After He (Jesus) had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.  Mt 14:23
